Stages of Steel Production

Iron Production

To produce steel, iron must first be made by placing coke, limestone, and iron ore in a melting furnace to create the so-called molten iron. At this point, there would still be many impurities in iron that make it brittle, and have to be removed.

The Primary Stage of Steel-making

To remove impurities, the molten metal is immersed in steel scrap. Oxygen is introduced through the oven, which in turn removes a lot of impurities. For electric ovens, electricity works to remove impurities and achieve the same results.

The Secondary Stage of the Steel-making

Some adjustments are made to the primary steel to make the composition perfect and to reduce the amount of impurities. This is done by changing the temperature or removing some elements. This may include processes such as stirring, removing gases, or adding argon bubbles.

Casting

The molten steel is poured into a cooling mold. This allows the steel to become solid. It is then pulled while still hot. After cooling, the metal is cut to desired lengths and sent to another location for initial formation.

Initial Formation

Steel products are formed through a process called “Rolling”. This process helps to remove the defects in shape and obtain the required quality. This process can be used to produce tubes and flat products.

Secondary Formation

To form the final shape of steel, there is a number of techniques that can be used such as plating, cutting, pressing, heat treatment, etc.
